Suraj Kund Mela

Suraj Kund is a place near Faridabad in the state of Haryana, India. It is situated in the outskirts of New Delhi. Suraj Kund is situated in the Aravali Hills. This place has historical importance because of an artificial lake ( kund ) that is situated here. Actually the name of this lake is Suraj kund which means ' the lake of the Sun'. And the village situated near this lake is also called Suraj Kund for the obvious reason. The lake is said to have been built by the king Suraj Pal of Tomar dynasty in the Tenth century. Tomar was a sun worshipper and he had therefore built a Sun temple on its western bank. That is why the lake might have been named as Suraj Kund.

In the backdrop of this lake, a colourful traditional craft festival is held in Surajkund, every year from February 1-15. Traditional craftsman (artists, painters, weavers and sculptors) from all parts of the country participate in this annual celebration named as the “Surajkund Crafts Mela”. This mela (fair) is jointly organised by the Government of Haryana and the Government of India.

I and my wife went there this year (2010) on 15th Feb. I took many photographs inside this mela. I am putting some of those photographs on this page so that the visitor of this blog may have some idea of the mela.
